IDC recently released the “Worldwide All-Flash and Hybrid Flash Array Market: 1H2014 Vendor Shares and Market Outlook,”
Not surprising to anyone here at EMC, EMC is the market share leader in Flash.  In both “All-Flash Array Revenue” and “Hybrid Flash Array Revenue”, shipping over 58PB combined in the first half of 2014. WOW!
According to IDC, the Flash Market, both All-Flash Arrays (AFA) and Hybrid Flash Arrays (HFA), is “ON FIRE!” – exceeding their original 2013 projections.
IDC goes on to conclude that the addition of enterprise features to All-Flash Arrays will be necessary to successfully deploy All-Flash. Exactly! Flash is Media; it’s a way to store data, and yes, it’s fast. But being fast isn’t enough. In order to successfully integrate Flash into the data center, enterprise data services are a MUST! That’s exactly what EMC is focused on, the transforming impact of Flash on the data center.  Transforming economics via Hybrid Flash Arrays, a little Flash still goes a long way, to transforming architecture with the industry leading All-Flash Array XtremIO. The unique scale-out architecture creates a shared memory space across all controllers, delivering performance at scale with all data services all the time. Data services that include deduplication, compression, encryption and revolutionary snap shots that change the way applications are deployed.
The following tables are taken from the IDC Report; they reflect the 1H 2014 market share numbers for both All-Flash Arrays and Hybrid Flash arrays.

IDC Worldwide All-Flash Array
Market Share, 1H14
IDC Worldwide Hybrid Flash Array
Market Share, 1H14
World-Wide All-Flash Array Revenu by Vendor 1H14 World-Wide Hybrid Flash Revenue by Vendor 1H14

In both cases EMC is the market share leader, 22% and 35% respectively.  Looking a little closer at IDCs numbers it’s clear that the AFA Market is growing, as IDC said – “It’s on Fire”.  It’s also clear that the AFA Market is still dwarfed by the HFA Market.  In the first half of 2014, the Hybrid Flash Array market commanded 90% of external storage revenue.  That said, it’s also clear that the storage industry is evolving to more flash, it will be interesting to compare these numbers to next year and the following.
All-Flash Array - Hybrid Flash Array Revenue 1H2014 PIE
If you combine all of the numbers into a single view, a view of market share across All-Flash Arrays and Hybrid Flash arrays, EMC is obviously the clear leader.  You’ll also notice that the players in the combined market share are the storage venders you’re probably most familiar with.  I put together a quick reference, and what’s most interesting… the “Other HFA” category gets the #3 spot 😉

Why do I point this out?  The EMC Flash Strategy has always been “Flash Everywhere”.  Flash is a component, an ingredient.  It’s the underlying storage architecture and software that delivers the potential of Flash as a media.  Flash has been fundamental to our storage strategy for just about a decade now.  From our hybrid offerings where a little Flash goes a long way, to the now confirmed industry leading All-Flash Array, XtremIO, EMC is committed to leveraging Flash to accelerate an entire storage portfolio.
Combined All-flash and Hybrid Flash Market ShareWhile the All-Flash Array market is an incredible opportunity for EMC and the industry, a well-rounded portfolio will provide the choice needed to deliver the right architecture for the unique needs of our customers’ application deployments.  The EMC Flash Everywhere strategy has always been designed to address all of our customers flash needs, rregardless of application.  For more informaiton be sure to check out http://www.emc.com/storage/flash/index.htm and the latest EMC Pulse Blog on the topic.

Happy 1st Birthday XtremIO
November 2014 marks the 1st anniversary of the general availability of EMC XtremIO, and what a year it’s been!! From the initial EMC Acquisition announced at EMCWorld 2012, it was clear that XtremIO is different. The architecture was, and still is, fundamentally different than any other storage array on the market. Originally made generally available in November 2013, XtremIO demonstrated early adoption in the Virtual Desktop and Virtual Server space. XtremIO’s always-on inline data deduplication along with scale out architecture, was and is, truly revolutionary in the industry. It provides a platform for successful VDI deployments at scale.

It turns out VDI was just the beginning. With the introduction of XtremIO 3.0 Software in July, our customers immediately started to adopt new features like always-on data compression and space-efficient snapshots that instantly create high performance copies of database platforms without impacting the performance of production. Add to that the entry level 5TB Starter X-Brick and 7-year maintenance price protection and 7 year flash life endurance protection, and you start to get the picture. This is a different storage array.

Happy Birthday Architecture still Matters
So much so that I would argue that XtremIO isn’t about Flash at all. What you may ask… isn’t XtremIO an All-Flash-Array? Yes, of course it is. But the advanced data services and consistent performance capabilities are all related to how data is handled and processed by the core XtremIO software. Software that runs on the controllers providing consistent performance with full data services at scale. Flash just happened to be the media of choice when the core-software was developed. It’s all about XIOS – XtremIO Operating System. Featuring: Content-Based Data Placement, Dual Stage Metadata, XtremIO Data Protection (XDP), and In-Memory Metadata XIOS provided the foundation for additional services like compression and snapshots with more to come.

And that’s really the beauty of XtremIO one year later, and we are just beginning the journey.  Happy 1st Birthday XtremIO!

Oh, and don’t forget the $1,000,000 Guarantee, recently extended!!

EMCs Microsoft Solutions Team recently released a white paper highlighting the benefits of XtremIO combined with Microsoft SQL Server 2012/2014 running in a VMware vSphere environment. Xtrem Performance.  It also represents a crossroads for me personally; after all, I started my blogging over at www.insidethepartnership.com focused on the EMC/Microsoft Partnership. What better way to come full circle than with an Xtrem performance and efficiency white paper.

Looking at common challenges seen by Microsoft SQL Administrators, how can XtremIO accelerate database performance and enable consistent predictable performance at scale while enabling additional functionality?

SQL Server XtremIOLet’s start with performance. Flash is fast, that’s a given, and I’ve blogged about that many times. Delivering consistent performance at scale can be the challenge. XtremIO Scale-Out Architecture proved to deliver consistent sub millisecond latency, consistently and predictably, regardless of how busy the system is and regardless of capacity utilization. XtremIOs unique In-Memory Architecture also proved to deliver additional performance and capacity linearly, ensuring that all X-Bricks in the configuration maintained the same low consistent latency, a key attribute to enable Flash.

Validating performance was a key attribute of the recent whitepaper. Using a standard TPC-E workload (Financial Market Simulation) a single database easily generated 15,000 IOPS at 700 Microsecond (0.7Millisecond) Latency. Remember, that’s with all data services turned on (Thin Provisioned, Protected, Deduplication and Compressed!) That’s the power of In-Memory Metadata. Add 4 more databases (5 total), 57,0000 IOPS, 5 more (10 total) 160,000 IOPS. 11 Hours later… still 160,000 IOPS latency sub millisecond – and that’s NOT “average” latency. That’s Linear Scale! Here is a quick video showing the results of the performance test.

XtremIO, Microsoft SQL Server Performance Test

Performance… Check! What about enhanced efficiencies for Microsoft SQL Server? One of XtremIOs value props is the efficiencies enabled by its in-line data services. Services like Deduplication and Compression that are always-on, always-inline and always in memory, designed to extend the life of Flash and maintain consistent predictable performance. Add to that Writeable Snaps capable of creating many copies of your production database with a small storage footprint (Deduplication/Compression) all maintaining the same performance of production (In-Memory Metadata); thus providing the ability to consolidate the most complex database designs, think test/dev, data warehousing, business intelligence and application workloads environments. That alone has the ability to change the way you design your databases and deploy your applications. Every copy of your database gets the same performance as production, without impacting performance of production. Add to that the fact that Deduplication Rates and Compression will reduce your overall footprint 10 fold (depending on the number of copies). The second demonstration highlights the efficiencies enabled by XtremIO.

XtremIO, Microsoft SQL Server Efficiently Test

Performance… Check! Efficiencies… Check! What about efficiencies and performance or snapshots at full production performance without impacting production? That’s exactly what the third test was designed to prove, and yes, we proved it!

It’s hard to believe, but it has been a full year since InsideFlash Episode #13 when I last interviewed Josh Goldstein. Josh is the VP of Product Management & Marketing for XtremIO. A year ago at VMWorld 2013, XtremIO was in Directed Availability, and everyone wanted to know what exactly EMC was working on. The primary focus of XtremIO then was Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, VDI. The always on in-line deduplication at memory speeds made VDI a natural fit for XtremIO, and it continues to be a great use case.

Fast forward 12 months to VMWorld 2014, and XtremIO is the #1 All-Flash-Array in the market – Customers are voting with their budget – $300 million annual run rate – the fastest growing storage array in history, but the growth has been much more than sales. Additional functionality has directly resulted in additional use cases and customer deployments. The introduction of XIOS 2.4 introduced snapshots and XIOS 3.0 introduces in-line compression with NO performance impact. Expanding customer value beyond VDI, snapshots can directly impact how applications are deployed. By providing full performance to test/dev copies, customers can impact application deployment cycles and upgrades. Adding compression on top of deduplication further reduces the amount of data stored on Flash, extending the overall value proposition.

All that and we are just getting started. Here is my interview with Josh from VMWorld 2014.
