Getting Flashy at EMC World 2015!

EMC World 2015 is a short week away, May 4-7, 2015 once again at the Venetian in Las Vegas.   The 2015 session catalog is live!  Is there any doubt?  Flash is impacting every aspect of the Storage Industry, disrupting normal, changing the way storage and applications are deployed across IT Organizations.  Last year I blogged about the EMC World 2014 Breakout Sessions that featured “Flash” as part of the breakout session; last year 2014 there were 9 sessions.  Do you believe that in 2015 there will be 34 sessions that include some type of “Flash”?  As I’ve always said, Flash is Everywhere – and it continues to enable EMC to develop a portfolio of solutions designed to help our customers deploy and manage enterprise applications.  From a small Flash footprint to an all-Flash data center, EMC has the right solution for the job.

EMC has taken the concept one step further, not only delivering on the concept of EVO:Rail but extending the concept with the VSPEX Blue Manager.  VSPEX Blue Manager

visual representation of the hardware.  Of course, VSPEX Blue comes with the EMC Support you would expect, 3 years with phone home capabilities.  Within the VSPEX Blue manager interface you will also find the VSPEX Blue Market Place.  The Marketplace is the EMC extension to the standard EVO:Rail management interface.  The market place delivers a central location for extending the capabilities of the deployed infrastructure.  Need additional storage capacity? Disruption, Enabling: The Tides of Change

“Fastest Growing Product in EMC History”. When you consider all of the products and all of the EMC acquisitions over the years, being the fastest growing product is incredible. Interestingly enough, all of these accomplishments happened in just over a year, since XtremIO GA back in November 2013.

Customers after customer are experiencing firsthand just how XtremIO can change the way applications are deployed. It’s not just storage, its enabling enterprise application deployments that just weren’t possible: In-line data services providing Deduplication and Compression, providing the foundation for revolutionary snapshot capabilities. Yes, I know storage arrays have been doing snapshots for decades so what’s different with XtremIO? Each snapshot gets full production performance without impacting productions, that’s just not possible with a traditional array. Be sure to check out my recent SAP blog for some more detail.

EMC Information infrastructure Mix shiftFlash Storage is creating a disruption in the industry; more importantly, Flash Storage is creating an opportunity. An opportunity to implement new technology to take advantage of Flash. The more you know about XtremIO, the more you realize that Flash is just the storage media – the real value is in architecture providing data services for next generation applications while reducing the overall cost of deploying storage. If you consider Flash and Emerging Storage Platform, it’s interesting to look at another slide from the Q4 earning Call, “EMC Information Infrastructure Mix Shift”. It’s clear that since 2010, “Emerging Storage” is becoming more and more relevant to our customers. While the pie has indeed shifted, what isn’t obvious from this chart is the size of the overall pie. Looking at Q4 2010 vs Q4 2014, Q4/2010 EMCs information Storage revenue was $3.6Billion (Source in Q4/2014 that number was $5.3Billion(, While the tide is changing, EMC is leading the way!

As I’ve mentioned many times on this blog, Flash is fast and by definition, an “All-Flash Storage” Array will be fast… sub millisecond response time is a given. IDC confirms our suspicion… EMC is #1 in Flash Market Share! But the real story is the bigger picture…

IDC recently released the “Worldwide All-Flash and Hybrid Flash Array Market: 1H2014 Vendor Shares and Market Outlook,”
Not surprising to anyone here at EMC, EMC is the market share leader in Flash.  In both “All-Flash Array Revenue” and “Hybrid Flash Array Revenue”, shipping over 58PB combined in the first half of 2014. WOW!
According to IDC, the Flash Market, both All-Flash Arrays (AFA) and Hybrid Flash Arrays (HFA), is “ON FIRE!” – exceeding their original 2013 projections.
IDC goes on to conclude that the addition of enterprise features to All-Flash Arrays will be necessary to successfully deploy All-Flash. Exactly! Flash is Media; it’s a way to store data, and yes, it’s fast. But being fast isn’t enough. In order to successfully integrate Flash into the data center, enterprise data services are a MUST! That’s exactly what EMC is focused on, the transforming impact of Flash on the data center.  Transforming economics via Hybrid Flash Arrays, a little Flash still goes a long way, to transforming architecture with the industry leading All-Flash Array XtremIO. The unique scale-out architecture creates a shared memory space across all controllers, delivering performance at scale with all data services all the time. Data services that include deduplication, compression, encryption and revolutionary snap shots that change the way applications are deployed.
The following tables are taken from the IDC Report; they reflect the 1H 2014 market share numbers for both All-Flash Arrays and Hybrid Flash arrays.

 In both cases EMC is the market share leader, 22% and 35% respectively.  Looking a little closer at IDCs numbers it’s clear that the AFA Market is growing, as IDC said – “It’s on Fire”.  It’s also clear that the AFA Market is still dwarfed by the HFA Market.  In the first half of 2014, the Hybrid Flash Array market commanded 90% of external storage revenue.  That said, it’s also clear that the storage industry is evolving to more flash, it will be interesting to compare these numbers to next year and the following.

If you combine all of the numbers into a single view, a view of market share across All-Flash Arrays and Hybrid Flash arrays, EMC is obviously the clear leader.  You’ll also notice that the players in the combined market share are the storage venders you’re probably most familiar with.  I put together a quick reference, and what’s most interesting… the “Other HFA” category gets the #3 spot 😉

Why do I point this out?  The EMC Flash Strategy has always been “Flash Everywhere”.  Flash is a component, an ingredient.  It’s the underlying storage architecture and software that delivers the potential of Flash as a media.  Flash has been fundamental to our storage strategy for just about a decade now.  From our hybrid offerings where a little Flash goes a long way, to the now confirmed industry leading All-Flash Array, XtremIO, EMC is committed to leveraging Flash to accelerate an entire storage portfolio.

Happy 1st Birthday XtremIO!

Happy 1st Birthday XtremIO
November 2014 marks the 1st anniversary of the general availability of EMC XtremIO, and what a year it’s been!! From the initial EMC Acquisition announced at EMCWorld 2012, it was clear that XtremIO is different. The architecture was, and still is, fundamentally different than any other storage array on the market. Originally made generally available in November 2013, XtremIO demonstrated early adoption in the Virtual Desktop and Virtual Server space. XtremIO’s always-on inline data deduplication along with scale out architecture, was and is, truly revolutionary in the industry. It provides a platform for successful VDI deployments at scale.

It turns out VDI was just the beginning. With the introduction of XtremIO 3.0 Software in July, our customers immediately started to adopt new features like always-on data compression and space-efficient snapshots that instantly create high performance copies of database platforms without impacting the performance of production. Add to that the entry level 5TB Starter X-Brick and 7-year maintenance price protection and 7 year flash life endurance protection, and you start to get the picture. This is a different storage array.

Happy Birthday Architecture still Matters
So much so that I would argue that XtremIO isn’t about Flash at all. What you may ask… isn’t XtremIO an All-Flash-Array? Yes, of course it is. But the advanced data services and consistent performance capabilities are all related to how data is handled and processed by the core XtremIO software. Software that runs on the controllers providing consistent performance with full data services at scale. Flash just happened to be the media of choice when the core-software was developed. It’s all about XIOS – XtremIO Operating System. Featuring: Content-Based Data Placement, Dual Stage Metadata, XtremIO Data Protection (XDP), and In-Memory Metadata XIOS provided the foundation for additional services like compression and snapshots with more to come.
